Memorial Day

Memorial Day this year was fun.  It was nice weather, a holiday and we wanted to BBQ!  Scott really likes our grill and we haven't used it for a bit, so we decided to have everyone over at our place.  Our place is small, but we invited family over anyway.

The day started out good with Scott and I going shopping in the morning for some groceries for the BBQ that day.  We remembered that Burger King was having smoothies for $1 that day and though we don't ever eat at Burger King, $1 for a smoothie was a pretty good deal; so we went and got some for breakfast.  They actually tasted pretty good.

We then stopped to get gas and while we were getting gas, I saw this lady walking over to our car.  I tried not to make eye contact with her as I thought she would be asking for money and I just have a hard time in knowing what to say when people ask that.  Scott's mom taught him a good rule of just saying that you can offer them food instead of money.  Scott was outside, so she talked to him and asked if we were headed a certain way.  We said "no" just to be safe in that we had no idea where she would want to be taken.  The lady then started talking about how her and her daughter have been waiting for a bus for a long time and just wanted to go to Kneader's restaurant for breakfast.  Kneader's was just down the street and on the way to our place anyway, so we gave them a lift.  I had no idea how they would get back, but it felt good to do something nice for someone.

We returned home and waited for family to arrive.  Once family arrived, we started on barbequing the hot dogs and hamburgers.  We realized that our neighbors upstairs were gone for the weekend, so I got a picnic blanket out and we ate on the yard out back.
We love the juicer that Scott's mom got me for a birthday present!  We also loved the oranges that they sent back with us from our trip to California.  Those oranges make the BEST orange juice.  I don't have any pictures, but Scott's parents also gave us a bag of lemons.  I don't use lemons a lot in cooking, so I wasn't sure what to do with them.  We were juicing some oranges and then got the idea to make home-made lemonade as well!  Mom had brought some strawberries and so we made strawberry lemonade from scratch.  It actually turned out pretty yummy!  I don't have a doubt we'll keep using this juicer throughout the summer.
Scott loves his watermelon during the summer!
Rice Krispie treats for dessert!
There is a park right around the corner for our place, so we headed over there and decided to play kick ball since there was an even number of us.  I guess it was the first time that the nieces and nephews played kick ball, but they did great!  It was a lot of fun and brought back memories of kick ball in elementary school.  After kick ball was done, the kids played on the play ground and some of us threw around a frisbee.

Apparently we were out there long enough and it was hot enough for me to get a sunburn.  Oops.  Got to start putting on sun screen every time Scott does.  We came back, had some treats and relaxed for a bit.

It was fun to hang with family, have a BBQ and play some games.  It just makes me even more excited for us to get our house so we can actually have the space to do this more often.
